Smart Circuit Breaker for Smart Low Voltage DC Power Grids
This paper presents the first industrialized 100 A / 800 V Smart Semiconductor Hybrid Circuit Breaker (SCHCB), utilizing a hybrid switching concept combining a high-speed mechanical arcing switch, a bidirectional power semiconductor switch, a robust voltage clamping circuit, and a mechanical isolation contact system.
In combination with the newest IGBT power module generation, sub-millisecond fault interruption at current rates of rise up to 5 A/µs is reached. Insights in the design as well as electrical, thermal, and standardized short-circuit measurement results are presented. The design enables further innovation due to a 90% reduction in power module volume and weight in applications such as industrial facilities, data centers, renewable energy systems, and smart LVDC power distribution grids. This paper showcases its capabilities for a coordinated selective protection architecture in an 800 V DC distribution system with full short-circuit selectivity.
