AUTOMOTIVE Littelfuse launches automotive TVS diodes with extremely low clamping voltage

Littelfuse, Inc. has announced the launch of its TP7.0SMD-XC Series automotive-grade transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes, led by the TP7.0SMD24CA-XC. The new series uses advanced foldback technology to achieve an extremely low, flat-clamping voltage while handling up to 7000 W of peak pulse power in a compact surface-mount package.
Automotive electronic systems built around sensitive ICs with low absolute maximum ratings (AMR) need protection components that clamp very close to the circuit's working voltage. Conventional TVS devices often can't reach that low a clamping level on their own, forcing designers to connect multiple devices in series and add cost, complexity, and board space to their protection schemes.
The TP7.0SMD24CA-XC addresses this challenge with a low, flat 24 V clamping voltage and up to 7000 W of peak pulse power in a single DO-214AB (SMC) package—the first time Littelfuse has combined this level of surge capability with foldback clamping performance in an SMC device. The result gives engineers more headroom to protect low-AMR ICs, while still meeting automotive 12 V and 24 V jump-start compliance requirements.
Key features and benefits
- Up to 7000 W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs waveform) in a compact SMC package
- 24 V clamping voltage with a foldback characteristic for a low, flat-clamping response
- Reduces or eliminates series-connected TVS devices, lowering BOM cost and board space
- Enables selection of lower-voltage-rated MOSFETs while still meeting automotive requirements
- AEC-Q101 qualified and PPAP capable for automotive reliability
- Wide operating junction temperature range of -65 °C to 175 °C
- IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection up to 30 kV (air/contact) and IEC 61000-4-4 EFT protection on data lines
- Matte tin lead-free plated, halogen-free, and RoHS compliant
Designed to simplify 12 V and 48 V battery protection
The TP7.0SMD-XC series targets automotive 12 V battery systems, including zone control units (ZCUs), anti-reverse protection, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). When connected in series with a conventional TVS device, it can also extend low-clamping protection to 48 V battery systems, allowing designers to:
- Meet 12 V and 24 V jump-start compliance requirements in a single device
- Extend low-clamping protection to 48 V systems using a series TVS configuration
- Reduce total component count compared to multi-device protection schemes
“By employing advanced foldback technology, the TP7.0SMD-XC series achieves an extremely low clamping voltage that conventional TVS devices can’t match, while still passing automotive jump-start compliance testing,” said Charlie Cai, Director of Product Marketing, Littelfuse. “This gives our customers the headroom to protect sensitive ICs with low absolute maximum ratings, reduce component count, and even specify lower-voltage-rated MOSFETs without compromising on automotive reliability.”
