Meeting Tomorrow’s Energy-Efficiency Requirements: The MOSFET DID3A2N65 Matters
For designers of compact AC-DC power adapters, efficiency is no longer simply a matter of improving system performance. It is a regulatory requirement. Under European ecodesign requirements, modern single-voltage external power supplies below 49 W must meet strict limits for both no-load power consumption and average active-mode efficiency. Since 2020, the maximum no-load power consumption has been 100 mW, with the limit set to tighten further to 75 mW from 2028.
For power-supply designers, this creates a challenge across the entire operating range. Meeting the no-load requirement is only one part of the equation; the power supply must also maintain the required average efficiency across multiple load conditions.
This makes the choice of switching MOSFET increasingly important.
Gate charge and RDS(on): Two key parameters for efficiency
In a switching power supply, every switching cycle consumes energy. A portion of that energy is associated with charging and discharging the MOSFET's gate.
The lower the MOSFET's gate charge, the less energy is required to drive the device at a given switching frequency. This can help reduce switching-related losses, particularly in applications operating at high frequencies.
At the same time, conduction losses remain a major consideration. When the MOSFET is conducting, its on-state resistance, RDS(on), determines how much power is dissipated in the device.
For designers working to maximize efficiency, therefore, low gate charge and low RDS(on) are both important selection criteria. The optimum balance depends on the converter topology, switching frequency, operating voltage and load profile.
A 650 V MOSFET for compact power supplies
Diotec’s DID3A2N65 is a 650 V, 3.2 A N-channel MOSFET designed for high-speed switching applications where efficiency, compact dimensions and reliable voltage handling are critical. The device combines low gate charge, low on-state resistance and fast switching performance in a compact TO-251/I-PAK package.
For AC-DC power-adapter designers, this combination can help address the competing requirements of efficiency and compactness. The 650 V voltage rating also provides the voltage capability required for primary-side switching applications connected to the rectified mains supply.
As regulations continue to push power-supply efficiency higher, semiconductor selection becomes an increasingly important part of the overall design strategy. Choosing a MOSFET with the appropriate combination of switching performance, conduction losses, voltage rating and package characteristics can make the difference between simply meeting today's requirements and designing with tomorrow's requirements in mind.
Designed for high-speed switching applications
The DID3A2N65 by Diotec is suitable for applications including:
Auxiliary power supply flyback converter
Offline AC/DC power supply
Active discharge switch
For engineers and technical buyers, the key consideration is not simply the MOSFET's voltage and current rating. Parameters such as gate charge, RDS(on), switching behaviour and package technology increasingly determine how effectively the device can contribute to overall system efficiency.
With its 650 V rating and low-loss switching characteristics, the DID3A2N65 gives designers a semiconductor solution from Diotec for the next generation of compact, efficiency-driven power supplies.
