Diotec’s P6SMB600CA-AQ: Fast Transient Protection for High-Voltage MOSFET Applications
The potential safety problem in high-voltage power electronics is clear: overvoltage protection is often determined by what happens in the first few microseconds of a transient event. Especially in MOSFET-based switching circuits, where parasitic inductances can generate significant voltage overshoots whenever current changes rapidly. To balance out this change, the inductance generates an opposing voltage, leading to a transient voltage spike. A transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode provides a fast, dedicated path these voltage transients by limiting the initial voltage excursion to support the active protection circuitry.
600 W TVS protection from Diotec
For applications requiring high-voltage transient protection, Diotec Semiconductor, headquartered in Germany, offers the P6SMB600CA-AQ, a bidirectional TVS diode in the compact SMB (DO-214AA) package with AEC-Q101 qualification.
It is part of Diotec's P6SMB family of 600 W transient voltage suppressor diodes, which combines fast response with stand-off voltages extending into the high-voltage range. With a maximum junction temperature of 150 °C, the P6SMB family supports operation in demanding power-electronics environments, and is available in both unidirectional and bidirectional configurations
The P6SMB600CA-AQ offers a 512 V stand-off voltage (VWM) and a 600 W peak pulse power rating, based on the standard 10/1000 µs pulse waveform. The bidirectional configuration makes the P6SMB-CA family suitable for protection requirements where symmetrical transient behavior is required.
Supporting active MOSFET protection
One application for a high-voltage TVS is an active-clamping protection circuit. Here, the TVS diode can respond to the initial voltage excursion while the active circuitry takes over the task of controlling the MOSFET voltage.
This approach is particularly relevant in power-conversion systems where switching speeds and parasitic effects make voltage overshoot difficult to eliminate through the circuit layout alone. The TVS therefore becomes part of a coordinated protection strategy rather than being treated as a standalone solution for all transient energy.
Designed for practical power-electronics requirements
For engineers selecting a TVS diode, the nominal stand-off voltage and peak pulse rating are only part of the design equation. Clamping voltage, leakage current, pulse waveform, thermal conditions, package characteristics and PCB layout all influence the actual protection performance.
For technical buyers, the automotive-qualified -AQ version also provides a defined qualification path for automotive applications. Diotec provides product documentation, technical information and qualification-related documentation as part of its product offering.
Protection has to be present before the transient arrives
A voltage transient does not wait for a protection circuit to react after the event. The protection device must already be in place, so that it can respond before it’s too late.
For MOSFET-based high-voltage systems, that can mean designing for the first few microseconds rather than relying solely on slower protection mechanisms.
With the P6SMB600CA-AQ, Diotec provides a high-voltage, 600 W TVS solution for applications where fast transient suppression is an integral part of the power-electronics design.
