Dominik Calcagno worked as Sales Manager for Germany and Austria at a well-known international semiconductor distributor till Q3 2024. In addition to his three years vocational training as an electronics technician for industrial engineering, Dominik holds a Master of Engineering degree and relevant professional experience in project management in the automotive industry. Taking over and further developing the family business in collaboration with Frank Holz and his father, Josef Calcagno is now a step into a new and exiting business as well as personal challenge.

As the new CEO of Solicomp – what is your long-term vision for the company and do you plan to make any changes in the company strategy

Dominik Calcagno: Our long-term vision for the company has been pretty clear since a few years. This resulted in acquiring Hauber & Graf, a company with great people and unique knowledge in the power electronics market. Our goal is to be one of the key players in the market of power electronics and sensors, known for unmatched knowledge and problem solving capabilities. Our understanding of distribution goes far beyond just selling semiconductors. We see our self as a steady evolving and changing company, whose greatest asset – besides our great employees - is to be highly flexible and committed to target our customer’s needs. Whether it’s distribution, engineering support or lifecycle management, just to name a few, we will be the first address to help our customers. Since I have been already involved in past strategic decisions, I commit myself fully to the path we have chosen.

How do you intend to strengthen Solicomp's innovative capabilities to stay competitive in the power electronics market?

Besides the obvious things like keeping our employees motivated and happy, performing regular training sessions, implementation of digitalization and constant process improvements , we are very aware, that business still happens between people. We keep our suppliers and customers as close as possible and observe the market, including political trends to be able to react fast and with appropriate decisions. Luck is also a big part, even if nobody wants to admit. Additionally, we collaborate with Universities, and educational institutions to keep the contact to future knowledge carriers and state of the art science.

The power electronics sector is rapidly evolving. What trends and challenges do you consider most critical, and how will Solicomp address them?

Looking at the geopolitical hurdles we have to manage, most of the challenges that the market for power electronics and Sensors is facing now, every other industry needs to master, too. In nearly every field, like rapid changing business environment, competition, technological disruption, or shortage of skilled workers, just to name a few, things change fast. We as Solicomp and H&G want to tackle these challenges with a broad range of measures such as redundant supply chains - mostly - European Lines, open minded and flexible employees and implementation of AI based support tools. But that’s just one side of the coin, even more important is an open, truthful and partnership based collaboration with our suppliers and customers. Additionally, we as a family company bring our personal values to the table, a clear commitment to make it beneficial for our customers, suppliers and employees.

Sustainability is a key topic in the industry. How does it fit into your strategy, and which technologies do you see as particularly future-oriented?

It is a perfect fit for us. We see ourselves as sustainability drivers. We deeply believe in the importance of changing our energy supply, networks and mobility. We trust in our products and know-how to help companies to reach their sustainability goals for a greener and better future for everyone. Technology wise we believe, the future belongs to SiC and GaN, which will be crucial for future electronic systems and developments. Of course in addition to well-known technologies and the importance of high voltage and high currant measurements.

It's important to understand that the availability of unlimited energy is not given. In contrary, energy might be at the wrong place at the wrong time even at the wrong level. Therefore, the capability to measure the current at high accuracy and to use intelligent systems to manage our energy distribution is critical for our future. We do provide relevant components and know how to our customers to enable them to provide the required solutions to the market.

Finally, a personal question: What experiences and values do you bring to your new role as CEO, and what particularly motivated you to take on this position?

I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to work for one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world and one of the biggest Distributors of the world. The combination of a project management skill set and learning the distribution business from scratch helps me a lot these days. Of course, I am very fortunate to have business partners on my side with experience like nearly no other. We share the same values and goals but target opportunities from different angles, which mostly results in the best possible solution. Further we are three very different personalities and give our best, to use everyone as it suites his personal strengths. My role is to lead the whole operational business and our team, whilst Frank and my father are involved in all strategic topics. Originally, I never planned to get into the family business, but it turned out, that a lot of people believed in me and time helped to grow the idea joining our family business. Now, since half a year has passed, it’s even more a privilege, than I ever could have imagined. The most important values we share as persons and as a company, are: open communication, respect towards everyone, reliability, integrity, quality in everything we do, loyalty, flexibility and of course sustainability.

Thank you for the interview, Mr. Calcagno.
