Digital Radio: Transforming Broadcasting for a Modern Era – Powered by Diotec's DI4A5C06SQ

75 years ago, Germany's first FM radio station started broadcasting in Munich. At that time, it was a big improvement over the existing AM stations regarding transmission quality and noise reduction. Nowadays, the transition from analog to digital radio provides crystal-clear audio quality. This is made possible with the conversion of audio signals into binary codes, which are then transmitted to the receiver without compromising the quality. There, they are again converted into the original audio information. Digital signals for transmission allow further comprehensive data services, such as displaying the station, the program, song titles, and their performer, or dedicated traffic information.

The conversion from the digital radio information into the audible signal is done by class-D audio amplifiers equipped with a push-pull output based on complementary MOSFETs. The advantage of using MOSFETs rather than bipolar transistors is their linear characteristics, even out at zero-crossing of the amplified signal. This avoids distortion and allows for a linear conversion of the signal. The DI4A5C06SQ from Diotec Semiconductor is a dual N+P Channel MOSFET in a SO-8 package. Measuring just 4.9 by 3.9 mm², this part allows for high output currents in powerful amplifiers. Its low on-state resistance offers energy savings and high efficiency with no compromise on the audio system's performance.
